EU-funded IDEATION unveils its digital twin framework for Europe's inland waters at a Brussels forum on April 16

Europe's water networks are getting a digital overhaul, and the blueprint is finally ready.
The EU-funded IDEATION project is presenting its completed framework for a digital twin of Europe's inland waters at a major forum in Brussels this week, marking a turning point for how the continent monitors, manages, and protects its most essential resource. Digital twins create real-time virtual replicas of physical systems, allowing water operators to track network performance, simulate responses to floods or droughts, and identify problems long before they reach customers.
Until now, a common European framework for building these systems did not exist. IDEATION, led by Cetaqua and supported by eleven research and technology partners from across Europe, has spent two years developing exactly that. At the heart of its results is a technical reference architecture defining the standards and interfaces European water systems need to share data and models across national borders. The project has also produced OpenKIWAS, an open-access inventory of existing water data sources, technologies, and policy frameworks, giving utilities and developers a practical foundation for digital transformation.
The Final Cross-Country Multi-Stakeholder Forum takes place April 16, 2026, at the NH Hotel Berlaymont in Brussels, co-organized with Water Europe. It brings together the European Commission, utility operators, regulatory authorities, and private technology firms to review those outputs and align on a shared direction for digital water infrastructure. A real-world deployment from Barcelona's metropolitan water network will be presented as evidence the approach works in practice, demonstrating how digital twin technology supports faster decision-making, better water quality monitoring, and more efficient use of aging infrastructure.
The afternoon session shifts to commercial action, pairing utilities and municipalities facing specific water challenges with solution providers and investors ready to deploy capital. Analysts expect the event to accelerate what has so far been an uneven rollout, particularly among smaller municipal operators lacking the resources to build interoperable systems independently.
The completion of IDEATION removes one of the most significant structural barriers to digital transformation in European water. With a shared, interoperable foundation now in place, the continent's push toward smarter, more resilient water management is poised to move at a new pace.
