Anglian Water has launched a digital system to improve how leaks are identified and managed, as Britain's water sector faces tighter regulatory scrutiny.

The platform, called Hive, was introduced in July and is built on Esri's geographic information system technology. It integrates data from smart meters, sensors and field teams into a live operational map. While not all devices provide real-time information, the company said the system will allow faster and more predictive monitoring in the future.

Hive consolidates earlier risk dashboards and prototypes into a single operational view. Engineers can use it to locate leaks, gauge their severity and coordinate repairs more quickly, reducing both water loss and reputational risk.

The launch follows pressure from Ofwat, the UK water regulator, which has set strict leakage reduction targets. Companies that miss performance goals face financial penalties and heightened public criticism.

Anglian Water described Hive as part of a broader push to digitise water networks, with the system's design supporting future capabilities such as digital twins, virtual models that simulate risks before they materialise. The utility said the platform reflects a shift towards a "data-first" approach, where insights drive faster operational decisions.

Industry experts noted that technology alone will not guarantee success. Linking older infrastructure with new systems remains difficult, while staff training and adoption are essential. "Technology enables change, but people and process make it stick," one analyst said.

Utilities across Europe are monitoring developments closely. Climate change and rising demand are straining water supplies, prompting companies to explore digital tools to improve efficiency and meet environmental goals.

For Anglian Water, Hive signals an intent to modernise operations while addressing regulatory demands. Although some features remain under development, the platform is positioned as a step towards more resilient and data-driven water management.
